Growing older made me appreciate my country more. When I was younger, I wanted to go abroad/live abroad because life always seems more idyllic and ‘chill’ in some countries. But I’ve come to realise that life is what you make of it and my perception of Singapore slowly changed over the years. I no longer have that strong need to live abroad, instead I’m growing to be more content where I am. And to count my blessings being born as a Singaporean, enjoying relative peace, comfort and especially having bilingual education. My basic needs are met just because I’m born in Singapore. That is mind blowing when you look at the global needs and lack.
There is always busyness in a city, the hustle and bustle, the inevitable stressors, but it is exactly there on the flip side that we get the convenience we enjoy because others/we work hard, the safety in numbers, and entertainment round the clock. I’m a city girl through and through even though huge crowds terrify me, I love that I have easy access to all kinds of cuisines in hawker centres, kopitiams and our aircon malls. We have a vast collection of books in public libraries and of course, good internet connection too 😂
Beyond just on National Day 🇸🇬 and the #ilovesingapore post then, I’m continually just learning to be thankful to be where I am.
In the bible, cities are meant to be places of shelter and refuge and I pray that our city state can continue to be a place of safety, and a place where many can be proud to call home.
